STATEMENT REGARDING PRIVACY OF HEALTH INFORMATION
Palmetto, Georgia — The City of Palmetto is committed to respecting the privacy and dignity of all individuals, including residents, elected officials, city staff, and their families.
The City does not publicly post, discuss, speculate on, or release information regarding the medical or health conditions of city employees, members of the City Council, residents, or any individual. Personal health information is considered private, and decisions regarding whether to share such information publicly remain solely the responsibility of the individual or their immediate family.
The City of Palmetto follows all applicable federal and state privacy laws, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). HIPAA is a federal law enacted in 1996 that establishes national standards to protect sensitive patient health information from being disclosed without the patient's consent or knowledge. The law helps safeguard the privacy and security of personal medical information and ensures that individuals maintain control over the disclosure of their health-related information.
As a matter of policy and principle, the City respects the privacy rights of all individuals and will not engage in public discussions concerning a person's medical condition, treatment, diagnosis, or health status unless such information has been voluntarily disclosed by the individual or their authorized family representative.
